Daniel ZS6JR is tasked with the technical
portfolio.
CQ-DX African Safaris
offers a number of packages…..single operator single tx,
multi-op single tx or multi-op multi tx.
Radios that can be used include:-
- Elecraft K3
- Yaesu FT1000MP
- Kenwood TS850
- Icom IC765.
Amplifiers that can be used are:-
- Icom IC2KL
- Kenwood TL922
- Tokyo HL1K.
For the multi-tx dxpeditions Dunestar and ICE band pass
filters can be used together with stubs.
CQ-DX African Safaris
has 2 portable trailer towers that are used to support
the antennas.
There are several choices of antennas.
- Cushcraft A4S,
- A3S tribanders,
- A3WS warc duo-bander,
- Tennadyne T8 lp and a Minibeam 2 ele for 17 and 12m.
- A 2 ele wire beam,
- 10m long vertical with elevated radials and a wire
4 square is available for use on 40m.
A 20m long aluminium mast is used for 30, 80 and 160m.
Switching is done remotely via the coax cable and either
20 or 40m long radials are run along the ground, location
dependant.
On arrival Daniel ZS6JR will assemble the tower and antennas
as well as the station configuration with help from the
customer concerned.
Time taken is 1 day and perhaps another morning dependant
on the specific requirements.
Swaziland already has a permanent tower installed and
has a Cushcraft A4S at 24m, an A3WS at 20m as well as
a wire 40m 4 square around the tower. Thus minimal installation
time at this destination. A small selection of tools and
spares are taken along to enable running repairs to be
undertaken.
Daniel ZS6JR will be on hand to affect such repairs.
Operators are requested to bring along their own preferred
headset, footswitch and key, as well as a suitable laptop
and logging software and necessary connecting cables and
connectors to attach to the chosen radio..
CQ-DX African Safaris is pleased to announce that we
are able to offer 2 Elecraft K3 radios to the multi-operator
dxpeditions. The older Yaesu FT1000MP’s have offered
fine service over the last 4 years….however, apart
from the better dynamic range the Elecraft K3’s
offer lower phase noise characteristics, relay switched
front-end filters resulting in better receive immunity
to intermod especially in the closer station proximity
found in dxpeditions and better DSP functionality. They
are also smaller and lighter than the older radios. With
the improvement in the solar conditions the radio will
also permit operation on the 6m band, a feature the Yaesu’s
did not have.
The K3’s are fitted with 8 pole 2.8 kHz 8 ssb and
400hz cw filters. I am particularly pleased with the announcement
and look forward to the next big group to put the radios
to the test……..73 Daniel ZS6JR
